I would like to order ARJ or JAR. Can you email it to me?
Because of recent fraudulent activity, we reserve the right to limit transactions from unverifiable
customers.
-
How do I register my copy of ARJ or ARJ32?
With your registration email, you will receive an attached file, named 'REGISTER.DAT'. Place this file
in your ARJ or ARJ32 directory, then execute 'REGISTER.EXE' with either the -ARJ option or the -ARJ32
option, depending upon your software. Please note that the registration key for ARJ does not work with
ARJ32, and vice-versa.
Instructions may also be found in the REGISTER.TXT file in your ARJ or ARJ32 directory.
-
Do I have to register ARJ, ARJ32, or JAR if I use it at home for my personal computer
activities (BBSing, backup, sharing files)?
No, you do not have to register them for such activities. Instead, please
share them with a friend as a way of showing your appreciation. However, registration does provide
financial support to our small company.
-
May I distribute ARJ or ARJ32 self extracting archives or ARJ, ARJ32 or JAR
without a license?
You may share these files with others for personal use. However, you cannot
distribute ARJ self extracting files publicly without a license. You cannot
distribute ARJ.EXE to install software without a license. The UNARJ.EXE
program is freely available to install software; however, it is very limited
in functionality.
-
May I distribute ARJ, ARJ32, or JAR archives freely?
Any of these archives (not including self extracting files) may be distributed
freely. Commercial users must have a registered copy of ARJ to make the
ARJ archives. And the recipient of an ARJ archive will need an ARJ
or UNARJ program to extract the archive.
-
What are the different license types for using ARJ/ARJ32?
There are three major license types for ARJ/ARJ32. The internal use license
is provided for ARJ use on computers within one's own company. The external
use license is provided for ARJ use on computers outside one's own company
such as clients and customers. The distribution license is provided for
distributing ARJ self-extracting archives to others. Users should refer
to the LICENSE.TXT file included with the downloaded software for more details.
-
Do you have a local agent to handle my ARJ order?
In many countries, we do. Please see our list of
agents for further information.
-
Does our nonprofit organization qualify for a donated license?
To obtain the donation of a SITE LICENSE and/or DISTRIBUTION LICENSE, please
write, providing details of your organization's religious and charitable
activities and the intended use of ARJ or JAR. A free license will be provided
to qualifying organizations. Qualifications will be determined on a purely
subjective basis. Non qualifying organizations can always obtain licenses
by purchase.
-
How can I upgrade my ARJ or ARJ32 software?
If you are using the registered ARJ 2.7x or ARJ32 3.x or later version, you can upgrade by
downloading the newest version from our website.
Users should then refer to the REGISTER.TXT file included with the downloaded software for more details.
-or-
If you are using an older registered version of ARJ, you can upgrade by downloading the newest version from our website and by requesting an upgraded registration code from us via email. Please send us your current registration code to get a new one.
Users should then refer to the REGISTER.TXT file included with the downloaded software for more details.

What is the difference between ARJ, ARJ32, and JAR?
We now have three archiver products to meet various compression needs.
We developed the new archiver, JAR16/JAR32, so that we could provide
state of the art data compression with solid archiving techniques and new
compression algorithms. These improvements could not be added to ARJ without
introducing serious compatibility issues with older releases of ARJ.
JAR16/JAR32 compresses significantly better than ARJ and PKZIP for
many files and provides long filename support for both Windows 95 and Windows
NT. JAR16/JAR32 duplicates much of ARJ's powerful functionality and provides
new original functionality, too. However, it does not duplicate ARJ
and requires more system resources (memory and cpu power) to run.
ARJ has the advantage of a large installed base, a simple archive format,
significant third party software support, and a long history of reliable
performance. In addition, ARJ has many more archiver functions than other
archivers including JAR16/JAR32.
ARJ32 is functionally similar to ARJ but unlike ARJ, ARJ32 supports long
filenames in the Windows NT/Vista/7/8 32 bit and 64 bit environments.
-
Can I use ARJ, and JAR together?
ARJ and JAR can be used on the same computer; however, ARJ and JAR are
not archive compatible. They have similar commands and functions but they
cannot process each others archives.
-
What do I need to be able to run ARJ, ARJ32, or JAR?
ARJ runs in DOS 2.11 and above and requires a minimum of 512K memory. JAR
runs in DOS 3.0 and requires a minimum of 640K memory, or for the Windows
version, 8MB of installed memory.
ARJ32 runs in the Windows 32-bit and 64-bit environments of Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, and in Windows NT, Windows 95,
and Windows 98. ARJ32 will not run in single-user mode DOS.
-
Can ARJ, ARJ32, or JAR be used on my MacIntosh computer?
No. Our products can only be used on IBM PC compatible machines (DOS and Windows).
-
How large a file can ARJ or JAR handle?
Both ARJ and JAR are able to handle files up to one gigabyte in size.
ARJ and JAR can process a drive larger than 2 GB with its multiple volume
feature as long as any individual file is not larger than 1GB.
-
What languages are ARJ and JAR available in?
ARJ32 and JAR are only available in English. ARJ is available in English. Only a very old version of ARJ (circa 1997) is available upon request in Portuguese, German, Polish, French
and Czech. We do not recommend or support the use of this old version in the current Windows
environment.
-
What is the difference between the US and International versions of ARJ, ARJ32,
and JAR?
The international version of each program does not have the new strong
encryption module included. Otherwise, they are identical.
All new versions of our software will be distributed without the encryption
modules.
-
Is ARJ currently available for Linux or Unix?
No, but it may be in the future.
-
Do you make ARJ for OS/2?
No.
There is a Russian
software company that has developed a program named ARJ/2. We have no relationship
with that company.
-
Does ARJ, ARJ32, or JAR support long filenames?
JAR32 supports long filenames in Windows 95 and NT.
ARJ 2.60 and above supports long filenames in Windows 95, 98, and Millenium.
ARJ 2.83 and above supports long filenames in Windows 95, 98, Millenium, 2000, and XP.
ARJ32 fully supports long filenames in Windows 7, Vista, NT, 95, 98, Millenium, 2000, and XP.
-
What is an ARJ security envelope?
This is an ARJ option which allows the user to "seal" an
ARJ archive with a digital signature in order to allow authentication of
the archive contents. Tampering with the ARJ archive will destroy
the authentication signature.
-
How do I create an ARJ security envelope?
This is an optional item available when you purchase the software.
-
Does ARJ have a help feature?
If you type ARJ [return], you will see a simple help screen. If you type
ARJ -? [return], you will see more detailed help information. However,
this help does not replace the provided ARJ documentation.
-
Do you provide source code or libraries or DLLs for incorporation into
our applications?
No, we do not. We do, however, provide free extraction source code
in UNARJ. For application use, we provide only the ARJ executable
program.
-
Can JAR create self extracting archives?
JAR version 1.02 does not support self extracting archives.
-
Can I back up my files with JAR32 and restore them using JAR16 without
losing my long filenames?
No.
-
What is WINARJ?
WINARJ is just one of the available third party ARJ interfaces under Windows. WINARJ is a product of LA
Soft, which is not a subsidiary of and does not have any relation to
ARJ Software.
-
What is ARJ/2?
This is an ARJ-like product for the operating system OS/2 from a company
in Russia with the same name as ours. This company is not affiliated
with us.
-
What is ARJ v2.8?
ARJ v2.8 is a hack of an earlier test version of ARJ. We have newer versions available.
-
How do I use ARJ with ZIP?
ARJ and ZIP are both archivers. However, they are not compatible.

- If you have problems...
-
I have forgotten my password. Can you help me figure it out?
There is no known method to recover the password other than by brute force,
which could take a very long time. The longer the password, the longer
it would take to guess it. ARJ Software. cannot provide help
in finding lost passwords.
-
During extraction, ARJ aborts with a "Bad header" or "Bad file data" error
message. How do I recover my files?
Using the -jr option of ARJ, you should be able to recover the uncorrupted
files in the archive. The corrupted files are unrecoverable. As a preventative,
you can use the -hk option to build an error correction recovery file that
will allow you to correct minor data corruption problems.
-
Is there any way to fix a CRC error in ARJ?
Yes, but only if you have used ARJ v2.55 or higher and only if you have
previously generated a data damage protection file when compressing your
files. Then you can repair your archive with the "Q" command. See ARJ.DOC/ARJ.TXT
for more details about the "Q" command. Otherwise, ARJ provides a
"-jr" option to allow you to process the undamaged portions of an ARJ archive.
-
I got a message in JAR that my CRC check failed. What does this mean?
The archive is damaged. If you specified the addition of recovery records,
you can repair the archive. See JAR.DOC for more details on the use of
recovery records.
-
How do I avoid an "out of memory" error when I am trying to archive a large
number of files with ARJ?
You can switch to ARJ 2.70 or you can use the -hm option which will move
the list of file names outside of conventional memory, freeing up memory
for ARJ to operate. This option is available in versions 2.50 and higher.
-
I am having difficulty downloading your programs from your web site. Is
there somewhere else I can get them?
We have purposely stored our programs on two different FTP sites, which
are both listed on our web site. Usually when one is down, the other is
working. Make sure you have tried both sites. If neither is available,
please wait and try again later. You can also try the download sections
of www.zdnet.com and
www.cnet.com for ARJ and ARJ32.
-
Can you help me with my Fraternity Data Management software?
No. Someone put our e-mail address on this software without our permission.
Please contact the person who sent you the software for technical assistance.
